Pass Rusher Jadeveon Clowney leaves Cowboys without Contract.

I'm told Jadeveon Clowney has left the Cowboys facility without signing a contract, per league source. The plan was for Clowney to arrive in Dallas Wednesday for a visit and physical. The Cowboys are currently preparing to host the New York Giants Sunday in Week 2 after falling to the Eagles 24-20 in the opener. The Cowboys will keep in contact with Clowney, as they continue to evaluate the trajectory of their team.

Even after trading generational pass-rusher Micah Parsons just before the start of the regular season, the Cowboys were still able to generate the 5th-most quarterback pressures versus Philadelphia, however, the problem was that Dallas was not able to finish those efforts. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was sacked only once, and worse Hurts tied with Jets running back Breece Hall for 7 rushing first downs--the most of any player in Week 1.

This is where a player like Jadeveon Clowney seems to make sense for Dallas, even while an acquisition is on hold. While the 32-year old edge produced just 5.5 sacks for the Carolina Panthers last season, the Panthers struggled overall starting the year 3-11.

My understanding is that while Clowney a Rock Hill, SC native was generally excited about coming home to the Carolinas after playing in Baltimore, Cleveland, Tennessee, Seattle and Houston before that, there was hope he'd be more effectively utilized on the field and his family more embraced through organizational activities in comparison to previous spots. The season before the last, Clowney still recorded 9.5 sacks with the Ravens even while many critics questioned what he had left in the tanks.

Furthermore the Cowboys allowed the 5th-most rushing yards with 158 gained on the ground by Eagles, with the addition of defensive tackle Kenny Clark who came to Dallas in exchange for Micah Parsons at the insistence of owner Jerry Jones to "improve the run."

So clearly, the Cowboys still need support up front, as the general consensus seems to be that they held up fairly well in coverage with corners Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland and Kaiir Elam.

The good news for Dallas: Their next opponent, the Giants and the rush offense didn't put a very potent product on the field netting just 74 rush yards versus the Washington Commanders, Additionally, most teams in the NFL don't have the top player in the NFL in running back Saquon Barkley (as voted on by his peers), combined with a Super Bowl winning modern dual-threat quarterback in Hurts. The Cowboys will have a totally different look facing 36-year old veteran Giants quarterback Russell Wilson who does not have the same youth and juice as 27-year old Hurts.

While granted Wilson was without his starting left tackle Andrew Thomas (foot), who's still not guaranteed to play Sunday, Wilson was the Giants leading rusher producing 44 of those 74 net rush yards, with Tyrone Tracy Jr. logging (24), Devin Singletary (9) and rookie running back Cam Skattebo getting (-3). We all know it's not usually ideal for the quarterback to be the lead back.

So while the day did not end with a deal for Clowney in Dallas, bringing him on still makes sense, plus the proximity factor is still there for Clowney who lives in Texas, and it'd be an opportunity for him to have a better homecoming this time around.
